# Desk Setup for 2023

In my youth I would rearrange my room at least a few times per year. I liked changing it up, adjusting to how I was feeling at that time. It kept things fresh and I always got excited to show my parents how I moved my TV and stereo to the other side of the room and put my bed in some weird spot in the middle. As an adult, I guess I mostly have this blog — so enjoy.

For the past 5 years, I’ve relied heavily on a pretty great life hack of using a [Husky workbench](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-62-in-W-x-24-in-D-Adjustable-Height-Solid-Wood-Top-Workbench-Table-in-Black-HOLT62XDB12/301810799) as a sit/stand desk. What got old there was the need for a keyboard tray when sitting in a chair. For whatever reason keyboard trays are terribly made (a market ripe for disruption?). So, I moved to a large [IKEA tabletop](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/pinnarp-countertop-walnut-veneer-20467479/) with a [Fully Jarvis sit/stand frame](https://www.fully.com/standing-desks/jarvis/jarvis-frame-only.html). I couldn’t be happier with this setup! The frame is incredibly sturdy and it was pretty easy to mount to the tabletop.

Underneath, I was able to achieve really clean cable management by using [cable sleeves](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FW3GTXB), [Velcro strips](https://www.amazon.com/VELCRO-Brand-Reusable-Management-Organizer/dp/B09RKGXHPM), [Command strips](https://www.amazon.com/Command-Hanging-Hangers-Posters-Adhesive/dp/B0751VFF2X), and custom 3D printed mounts for my [CalDigit](https://www.etsy.com/listing/945397420/under-desk-or-wall-mount-for-caldigit) and MacBook Pro. I also used some [cable raceways](https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Concealer-Wall-Raceway-Management/dp/B082X9RCZX) to help hold and contain cords that ran the length of the desk. This all keeps everything nice and tidy and also a giant pain in the butt anytime I need to change things. Worth it, though.

On the hardware front, I upgraded to a mesh Wi-Fi network with the [TP-Link Deco X60](https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-AX3000-System-Deco-X60/dp/B0889Q6KF3/). It’s helped keep my Wi-Fi much more stable when on video calls and it’s able to better handle the growing number of devices on our home network. I also started using smart plugs more, buying a bunch from [Meross](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JHJBQT) because they were both cheap and HomeKit compatible. So far they’ve been rock solid.

With all the other changes, I decided to go ahead and bring my record player back into the office. It was hooked-in to my stereo receiver in the living room with surround sound but wasn’t getting much use. I guess the kids (toddler and an infant) don’t care about vinyl yet…

As far as peripherals, I’ve stayed with my [Keychron K2](https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-k2-wireless-mechanical-keyboard) and basically ditched my [Ergodox EZ](https://ergodox-ez.com/). It was just too difficult to get used to. I’ve also changed to using my [Apple Magic Trackpad](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMMP3AM/A/magic-trackpad-black-multi-touch-surface?fnode=f7099d7aa6085a185f58be6285b9fd445e15c54e5acd69adb5c00380b8b785d64625ed55221b85fd8586e0b1dd2c80cbec43bc796a838c38c4bc5863463522fa8aef67861f50b3585c2606dcfedd7e50800453f17b1057218c3c5d8ae392309f) most of the time over my [Logitech MX Master](https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Master-Wireless-Mouse-High-Precision/dp/B07DHDFW5V). It’s so much easier to navigate [Arc](https://arc.net/), [Figma](https://figma.com), and [Miro](https://miro.com) with a trackpad.

Other than that, my setup has remained mostly the same over the past year. Same [mic](https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/microphones/mv7?variant=MV7-K), [monitor](https://www.amazon.com/BenQ-EW3270U-inch-Monitor-FreeSync/dp/B078HWBGH5?th=1), [hub](https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3-Plus-Thunderbolt-Dock/dp/B07CZPV8DF), [etc](https://speek.dev/uses). But, looking forward to making little tweaks here and there as I get more into smart home stuff.
